Feline Pine Clumping Natural Pine Cat Litter
I questioned the use of pine for cat litter. The problem lies with the phenol in pine oil.
Researching on this matter, not just taking the manufacturer’s word for it. What about wood in general, as many contain oils? Pine contains abietic acid and cedar contains plicatic acid. These acids can cause allergic reactions in cats that inhale the dust or odor. Causing respiratory upsets or asthma. Probably not a good kind of litter for cats that already have asthma. Had 3 cats over the years with breathing problems and I think it was mostly due to being on a high vehicle traffic area and a wall gas heater. Even I ended up with sinus issues during the time I had a gas stove.
Pine cat litters are usually safe for cats. Commercial wood and pine cat litters are treated to remove the phenol found in pine oil, contain no chemical additives, are made from untreated wood, and contain nothing other than 100% natural wood fibers.
Caution: pine litters not specifically manufactured for use by cats, would not be wise to use. Not at all advisable to use your wood pellets from your stove.
But this litter has qualities that might fit into your lifestyle. Environmentally it is a winner. No added scents, which your cat will love. Unscented litters may have earthy smell as in any grasses, wood, etc., but doesn’t contain any scent that is added for our noses.
If you decide to give this litter a try, introduce it to your pet, by putting it on the bottom of the box, topped with what they are now using. A gradual transition can be more successful than a complete switch.
